Abstract

This article extensively covers the process of formation of spatial metaphors in Russian literature of the 19th–20th centuries, their semantic features, functional possibilities in the literary text, and their place in the poetic system. Spatial images are analyzed as a conceptual tool that reveals the deep layers of content in the literary text, and how they influence the compositional structure of the artistic world created by the writer. Also, the role of spatial metaphors in expressing the hero's psyche, the author's views, and the aesthetic tendencies of the era is scientifically substantiated, and they are interpreted as an important figurative mechanism in the poetic dynamics of Russian literature of the 19th–20th centuries.
