Abstract

Objective: The goal of the study was to isolate and determine the antibiotic resistance in E. coli from urinary tract infections at Al-Hilla, General Teaching Hospital in Babylon, Iraq. Methods: Urine samples were obtained by patients (n = 120) who showed signs and symptoms of UTIs. Eighty E. coli isolates were found using a conventional biochemical profile. The antibiotic resistance pattern of E. coli against several antibiotics was determined using the Kirby-Baur method. Results: Bacterial etiological agent was isolated from 120 samples with highest prevalence of E. coli (80, 66.66%) followed by Staphylococcus aureus (20,16.66%), Proteus species (15,12.5%) and Pseudomonas species (5, 4.16%). E. coli susceptibility test against 17th of antibiotic types : Ampicillin (10μg) AMP [PENICILLINS] Amoxicillin-clavulanate (20/10μg) AMC [B-LACTAM COMBINATION],  Ceftazidime (30 μg) CAZ [CEPHALOSPORINS] Cefotaxime (30 μg) CTX [CEPHALOSPORINS], Ceftriaxone (30 μg) CRO [CEPHALOSPORINS], Meropenem (10 μg) MEM [CARBAPENEAMS], Amikacin (30 μg) AMK [AMINOGLYCOSIDE], Streptomycin (300μg) STR [AMINOGLYCOSIDE], Azithromycin (15μg) AZM [MACROLIDES], Doxycycline (30 μg) DOX [TETRACYCLINE], Ciprofloxacin (5 μg) CIP [FLUOROQUINOLONES], Levofloxacin (5 μg) LVX [FLUOROQUINOLONES], Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (1.25/23.75 μg) SXT [FOLATE PATHWAY ANTIAGONISTS], Chloramphenicol (30μg( CHL [PHENICOLS], Nitrofurantoin (300μg) NIT [PHENICOLS], Trimethoprim (5μg) TMP [PHENICOLS] and Aztreonam (30μg) ATM [MONOBACTAMS]. Novelty: The majority of human urinary tract infections are determined to be caused by multiple drug-resistant E. coli.
