Abstract
Objective: The purpose of this study was to ascertain if gestational diabetes to pregnant women infected with Helicobacter pylori, also known as H. pylori, was related to the infection. Method: IgG and IgM antibody levels to H. pylori were assessed in 79 pregnant women: 50 with gestational diabetes and 29 with normal pregnancies. The ages of the study participants and the healthy control group ranged from 22 to 46 years. The levels of HP-IgG and HP-IgM as well as IgG and IgM antibodies in the blood were measured using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, or method. Results: Serum levels of Helicobacter pylori IgG (HP-IgG) and HP-IgM (p < 0.05) were higher in women with gestational diabetes compared to the control group. HP-IgG and HP-IgM were found to be positively correlated with gestational diabetes. Women in gestational diabetes frequently have Helicobacter pylori infections. Novelty: Women who already have gestational diabetes are more likely to acquire gestational diabetes if they have an H. pylori infection. Preconception screening for and treatment of H. pylori can help prevent gestational diabetes.
