Abstract
Objective: A comprehensive assessment of serum ferritin, GGT, iron, total iron binding capacity, copper, and zinc levels can offer valuable insights into the interplay between type 2 diabetes, alcoholism, and iron metabolism in these patients. Method: Study design: The subjects included 120 individuals with diabetes Control Group this group will consist of healthy individuals without type 2 diabetes and who do not consume alcohol. Type 2 Diabetes Group this group will consist of individuals diagnosed with type 2 diabetes who do not consume alcohol. Alcohol Consumption Group this group will consist of healthy individuals who regularly consume alcohol. The following biochemical parameters have been studied, serum ferritin, GGT, iron, total iron binding capacity, copper, and zinc levels. Results: The mean GGT level was highest in the Alcohol group (45), followed by the Type 2 Diabetes group (35), and lowest in the Control group (25). Individuals with alcohol consumption had even higher mean ferritin levels (200) compared to both the control and type 2 diabetes groups. Both type 2 diabetes and alcohol consumption were associated with significantly higher copper levels compared to the control group. The mean zinc levels were significantly different between the control, type 2 diabetes, and alcohol groups, as indicated by the p-value of 0.02. Both type 2 diabetes and alcohol consumption were associated with statistically significant increases in iron levels compared to the control group. Novelty: Our results underscored the complicated interaction between T2DM, alcoholism and iron metabolism. Full management and monitoring of the serum markers, especially in T2DM patients or with history of alcoholism, may be important to optimize clinical consequences and prevent the developments of adverse health outcomes related to iron imbalance.
