Abstract

This article investigates the linguopragmatic characteristics, social functions, and communicative significance of the congratulatory speech act. The study analyzes its locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary components, highlighting their role in social and cultural contexts. The congratulatory speech act differs from other expressive acts such as wishes, praise, flattery, and commendation, because it regulates interpersonal relations, creates a positive emotional environment, and reinforces friendly communication. Descriptive, comparative, and pragmatic methods are applied to examine its structural and functional aspects. Findings indicate that congratulation is grounded in cultural norms and etiquette, reflects respect for the addressee, and strengthens social cohesion. It serves as a tool for expressing positive evaluations, emotions, and shared joy, while maintaining politeness and appropriateness in dialogue. Moreover, the congratulatory speech act embodies the speaker’s personal attitudes, cultural values, and emotional expressiveness, providing both expressive and relational significance in communication. The act is essential in regulating interpersonal relationships, promoting mutual respect, and eliciting positive emotional responses. This research demonstrates that congratulatory speech acts are crucial in social interaction and interpersonal communication, offering a complex combination of expressive, evaluative, and socially normative functions.
